Sacred

The word ‘sacred’ likely conjures up images of worship in some way; we think of something holy, set apart, as well we should because that’s the most common definition. For instance, my God is sacred to me and I try to live my life in a way that shows it.

But there are other definitions, and that’s what I want to discuss here today. Sacred can also mean ‘highly valued and important’. It can also mean, ‘entitled to reverence and respect’, or even ‘inviolable’. Thank you, internet dictionary.

What’s so important to you in this world that you value it above all else? That you won’t allow it to be violated? That you spend your time and efforts doing things to promote it? That you speak out on behalf of it? That you defend it, cherish it, and show it to others with a shining smile on your face?

Maybe it’s a relationship - your child, your partner.

Maybe it’s a value - an element of social justice.

Maybe it’s all human life.

All animal life.

A friendship.

Your reputation.

Your parents.

Next, let’s ask some questions. Why does it matter to you? Why does this thing, this person, this concept mean so much to you? What does it inspire within you that puts it at the forefront of your mind and heart, and what do you do to defend it, honor it, promote it?

What drives you?

Whatever your answers are, they’re not wrong. (Well, unless felonies drive you. Then, probably wrong, don’t do those.) But most of us will think of something positive or inspiring or inherently good. And whatever that thing is, it’s closely linked with your purpose on this planet.

Because - and I can’t stress this enough - YOU are sacred. You are set apart for a purpose. You are highly valued and important. You are here for a reason. Your purpose is inviolable. There is nobody else on the planet like you, and nobody else can fulfill the purpose you’re here for. YOU are worthy of respect. You are imbued with dignity. You are worth defending and cherishing.

There is entirely too much friction and hatred in the world and it’s clouding this purpose - for you, for me, for all of us. This week, I want you to dive deep and think about these questions I’ve asked, really spend some time on them, so that you can start living the life you’re meant to live.

Only when we’ve done that can we pass those values on to the next generation. Only when we’re able to see our true potential can we advocate for the potential of others. They’re worth it.

And so are you.
